In an era where reproductive rights are under attack, in the United States and abroad, the need to advocate for those affected by these restrictions is all the more important. The fight is not over with one protest, one phone call to your representatives, or one conversation. There are challenges we are to face in this ongoing battle, but we must continue to stand for others.
Here are ways you can continue the fight for reproductive rights and support those whose liberties are being imposed on:
- Provide donations to abortion organizations. Providing financial funds to abortion organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, will allow people the means to seek abortions. With anti-abortion state bills and the overturning of Roe v. Wade, it is people of color and those of low-socioeconomic class seeking abortions, who are impacted the most. To combat these issues, abortion organizations use the funds donated to them to provide transportation fees or other facilities required to ensure the safety and anonymity of people seeking abortions.
- Attend protests and community events in support of abortions. Hearing the stories of those who have been affected by the bans on bodily autonomy will allow you to understand the continued importance to fight for healthcare rights.
- Hold your local, state, and federal representative accountable. Emailing, calling, leaving voicemails, and sending letters to your representatives demanding them to take action in protecting the right to reproductive healthcare will hold them accountable.
- Vote for all upcoming elections! It is only through our “numbers” and collective votes during small- or large-scale elections that we can bring pro-abortion policy forth. Relying on others to vote for us will lead to a mindset in which none of us will participate in the election process. In turn, the issues we care for, such as reproductive healthcare accessibility will be in the hands of those who oppose it.
- Empathize with people who share their abortion stories with you. It is crucial for you to show your support to those who feel comfortable sharing their abortion story with you. Attacking them for making a personal healthcare choice can add trauma to their abortion experience.
- Engage in conversations with friends, family, and community members about the need for accessible and affordable reproductive care. Spreading the message to others will allow them to see why their votes hold value in the future of reproductive healthcare, encourage them to donate to abortion organizations, and will direct them to inform others of such topics.
